Wind Mitigation Information

SAVE MONEY ON YOUR HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE

Did you know Florida law requires insurance companies to offer homeowners premium discounts for existing building features or home improvements that reduce damage and loss from hurricanes?

A wind mitigation inspection is performed to assess your homes ability to withstand storm force winds experienced during severe storms and hurricanes. New and existing homeowners often have this verification performed to maximize available insurance discounts. Insurers must accept a wind mitigation verification submitted by a licensed home inspector with specialized training. BEACHSIDE Home Inspection Wind Mitigation Information

Wind mitigation is the implementation of certain building techniques / features in order to limit damage caused by intense wind and driven rain. A Wind Mitigation Inspection checks for compliance with the updated 1994 South Florida Building Code or 2001 Florida Building Code. Areas reviewed are (ref: Citizens Insurance)

  1. Building Code (code used to design and build the home)
  2. Predominant Roof Covering (includes asphalt shingles, clay tiles, metal, and built up roofs)
  3. Roof Deck Attachment (method of securing roof sheathing to to trusses or rafters)
  4. Roof to Wall Attachment (method of securing roof trusses or rafters to walls)
  5.  Roof Geometry (common roof shapes are hip, gable or flat)
  6. Gable End Bracing (if gable, are the ends braced)
  7. Wall Construction Type (includes wood, masonary)
  8. Secondary Water Resistance (SWR) (presence water resistive barrier consisting of self adhering polymer modified bitumen or foam)
  9. Opening Protection (presence of rated windows and doors, or rated shutters)

A wind mitigation inspection consists of a physical inspection, photos and document review of the above features which are then recorded on a Wind Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802), for submission to your insurance company along with specific required photos and copies of documentation.

IMPORTANT: The OIR-B1-1802 Form has been updated and is effective 2/2/12. Additional reporting requirements have been added, increasing the amount of time for the inspection and reporting requirements.

Beware The Free and Cheap Wind Mitigation Inspections

The new, stricter requirements for wind mitigation verification require a 1) trained knowlege of wind mitiagation features and requirements,  2) hands on inspection with photos and 3) verification of documentation. Contractors offering the free or cheap inspections make money by rushing through as many inspections as possible per day or use the wind mitigation to market their other services.

An essential part of the wind mitigation inspection is educating you about what the wind mitigation features are, what features exist at your home, and what documentation is required by the insurance company to substantiate your discounts.
