How the roof (rafter / truss) connects to the walls of a home (top plate) is very important when considering a buildings resistance to wind damage. The weakest form of connection is an unfortified connection relying only on nailing, called toe nailing. To increase the uplift resistance of the roof structure, metal clips and straps can be added, essentially tying the trusses to the walls and ultimately the foundation. They type of metal clip used determines the amount of uplift force the roof can resist. The following is the hierarchty of Roof to Wall Attachments, from weakest to strongest:
Verifying the roof to wall connection is perhaps the most difficult verification in a Wind Mitigation inspection due to restricted access to the roof / wall attachment point.

Verification Method
The only way to verify roof to wall attachment is with a visit to the attic. Access to the interface of the truss to the wall plate is essential and is often limited. Access through the soffits can be an option on some homes.
Identification of the type and presence of metal attachments (clips, straps) will be recorded and photos taken.
